about

A'ho is a Sioux greeting/blessing that was tossed around camp all day. I've heard it as good morning, thanks, welcome, amen... A'ho!

I wrote the first draft of this song the day Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock was closed down. I worked to build up that camp in November/December, so to see footage of teepees burning was pretty powerful for me.

The first verse line about where breakfast comes from was inspired by a short story called "Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold.

lyrics

Born upon this land
made for you and me
work for things I want
work for the things I need

those who believe
that breakfast comes from the grocery
are darned to repeat
the worst parts of history

A'ho

So send me on my way
back to Sacred Stone
I will not behave
and no, I'm not alone

Those who believe
that white skin makes you worthy
are darned to repeat the worst parts of history

A'ho

Burn the whole thing down
in ceremony
Bless this sacred ground
that brought me to my knees

Those who believe
that their god wrote the recipe
are darned to repeat
the worst parts of history

A'ho

Glenwood Crowe Phoenix, Arizona

Glenwood Crowe started in 2015 as a multi-instrument solo project. Then in 2016, after a year of driving around the US getting involved in progressive politics and indigenous rights activism (while producing “Hiking With Glen” for YouTube), I started writing more political music (“Snacks”). Now I'm mostly just trying to play music with friends, tell stories, and sing songs in your living room. ... more
